What's In a Name? ![]() Hector Boiardi, an Italian immigrant, came to the United States in 1914 when he was just 17 years of age. Upon his arrival, he got a job as a chef at New York's Plaza hotel, where his brother also worked as a waiter. Hector Boiardi moved to Cleveland, and opened his own restaurant, Il Giardino d’Itali. Here he perfected his spaghetti & meatball recipe in 1929. His recipe grew so popular, that Hector Boiardi started to sell his sauces & pasta products in local stores & then nationally. Hector Boiardi remained an advisor in the canned pasta business until his death at 87 in 1985. Yes, there is a Chef Boyardee, & yes, that is Hector Boiardi's picture on the label of his products.
